Abstract

Social capital, the networks, trust, norms of reciprocity and shared civic involvement, is an essential enabler of urban resilience, public health and social cohesion. Classical sociological literature has tended to discuss social capital with reference to either interpersonal or institutional structures, but more recent spatial research has begun to see the built environment as an active structural factor in the way people interact. This review paper systematically draws together past and recent theories to explore the relationship between social capital and urban form, neighborhood design and spatial morphology. This study examines how spatial configuration directly influences movement patterns, encounter probabilities and localized community bonding by examining a range of theoretical models, from Bourdieu, Coleman and Putnam to contemporary approaches to spatial syntax and complex urban modeling. The analysis features the value of the traditional pedestrian, highly connected, mixed use street layout that encourages organic trust and informal surveillance, versus the automobile-scaled, segregated suburban street layout that often weakens social networks and weakens civic attachment. In addition, major methodological and geographical deficits in the existing literature are described, which generally describe urban landscapes in the West, with their highly regulated nature, while largely neglecting the dynamic socio-spatial realities of rapidly urbanizing environments of the Global South. This paper uses a new conceptual framework that highlights the relationship between spatial mechanics and sociological theory in order to create a new comprehensive conceptual framework with spatial syntax parameters and community resilience indicators. In summary, the synthesis offers practical guidance for urban designers, spatial planners and social scientists for the deliberate design of physical space to foster sustainable, socially cohesive and resilient urban communities.
