CHINA’S EXPANDING GEO-STRATEGIC INFLUENCE IN AFRICA: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS

Abstract

China’s expanding geo-strategic influence in Africa has emerged as a significant feature of contemporary international relations. Over the past two decades, China has strengthened its engagement with African countries through trade, investment, infrastructure development, diplomacy, security cooperation, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This study examines the major drivers of China’s geo-strategic interests in Africa and evaluates the opportunities, challenges, and strategic implications associated with its growing presence. The study adopts a qualitative research approach based on secondary sources, including academic literature, government reports, policy documents, books, newspapers, and international organizations’ publications. Guided by Realist Theory, the study analyzes China’s pursuit of economic resources, strategic partnerships, political influence, energy security, and geopolitical interests. The findings suggest that Chinese engagement has contributed to infrastructure development, economic connectivity, trade expansion, and investment opportunities in Africa. However, concerns regarding debt dependency, resource exploitation, unequal economic relations, political influence, and strategic competition remain. The study concludes that China’s African strategy is reshaping regional and global power dynamics.
